Most commonly used irregular verbs

In addition to essere, stare, avere, fare, andare and uscire (which you already know) here are some other very common irregular verbs. Observe some common patterns in the present tense:

venire [to come]

dire [to say, to tell]

[lui, lei, Lei] viene

[lui, lei, Lei] dice

[noi] veniamo

[noi] diciamo

[voi ] venite

* To say that someone is coming to visit you, use the verb venire a trovare, as in Francesca viene a trovarmi domenica [Francesca is coming to visit me on Sunday].

bere [to drink]

sapere* [to know; to know how]

* Conoscere means to know in the sense of to be familiar with. Compare these examples: Non so sciare bene come mio padre. / Non conosco il padre di Luca.

Verbs volere, dovere and potere

The following three irregular verbs are essential in conversation, and you will use them a lot when learning how to invite someone, and accept or refuse an invitation. You already know volere (from Le espressioni utili per ordinare, unità 2):

volere [to want]

dovere [to have to; must]

potere [to be able to; can]

[lui, lei, Lei]  vuole

[lui, lei, Lei] deve

Volere, dovere, potere and sapere are followed by the infinitive form. Consider the examples:

  • Non voglio andare dal dentista.
  • Luisa deve studiare per un esame stasera?
  • Noi non possiamo uscire questo sabato.
  • Lui non sa fare la torta al cioccolato.
