CHI? Who? Chi è lui?
COME? How? / What…like? Come stai? / Com’è Venezia?
DOVE? Where? Dov’è Palermo?
QUANDO? When? Quando partiamo?
QUANTO? QUANTA? (sing.)
QUANTI? QUANTE? (plur.)
How much?            How many?  Quanto costa una focaccia?
Quante piazze ci sono a Ravenna?
PERCHÉ? Why? / Because. Marco: Perché ti piace Roma?
Gianni: Perché è stupenda!

Notice how these words contract when followed by the verb è:

  • Dove + è       →    Dov’è ?
  • Come + è      →    Com’è ?
  • Quando + è   →   Quand’è ?
  • Quanto + è    →   Quant’è ?

Che cosa contracts not only with è, but also with a- and ha:

  • (Che) cosa + è    Che cos’è ?
  • (Che) cosa + avere Che cos’haiChe cos’avete?

You do not need “do/does” to form a question in Italian. To ask any question, simply raise your intonation at the end of a sentence. Repeat after your instructor:

  • Prendi un panino.    vs.    Prendi un panino?
  • Sei italiano.    vs.    Sei italiano?
