Il verbo “avere”

The verb to have

Consider the conjugation of the verb avere:

(io) ho                                          (noi) abbiamo

(tu) hai                                         (voi) avete

(lui, lei, Lei) ha                            (loro) hanno

In many idiomatic expressions, Italian and English express the same concepts with two different verbs: avere in Italian and to be in English. Ho fame (literally, I have hunger) = I am hungry.
