The verb to have
Consider the conjugation of the verb avere:
(io) ho (noi) abbiamo
(tu) hai (voi) avete
(lui, lei, Lei) ha (loro) hanno
In many idiomatic expressions, Italian and English express the same concepts with two different verbs: avere in Italian and to be in English. Ho fame (literally, I have hunger) = I am hungry.
