I verbi “cominciare”, “cambiare” e “finire”
Verbs to begin, to change and to end
Italians use these verbs with either the verb avere or the verb essere in the passato prossimo (and other compound tenses). The difference depends on the context.
When someone begins, changes or finishes something (so that there is a direct object in the sentence, or an activity) we use avere, as in:
- Abbiamo cambiato idea. [We changed our mind.]
- Non ho ancora cominciato quel libro. [I have not yet started that book.]
- Hai finito di studiare? [Did you finish studying? Are you done studying?]
However, when something begins or finishes, or when someone/something changes, we use essere. In these cases there is no direct object, as in:
- Il concerto è cominciato tardi. [The concert started late.]
- Loro sono cambiati molto recentemente. [They changed a lot recently.]
- Lo spettacolo è finito. [The show is over.]
Other verbs that follow this same pattern include:
- iniziare (= cominciare)
- terminare ( = finire)
- migliorare [to improve] Mio fratello ha migliorato il suo inglese // Mio fratello è migliorato molto
- peggiorare [to worsen] Il tuo intervento ha peggiorato la situazione // La situazione è peggiorata
- salire [to go up; to climb // to get on] Ho salito le scale // Sono salito sul treno
- scendere [to go down; to descend // to get off] Ho sceso le scale // Sono sceso dal treno
