I mezzi di trasporto
Means of transportation
Notice that in Italian you say andare + in + means of transportation when you go somewhere by way of a certain means of transportation. The verbs camminare [to walk], guidare [to drive], volare [to fly] indicate the simple action of walking, driving and flying. Consider the following examples:
- Mi piace camminare vs. Vado al mercato a piedi
- Non mi piace guidare a Milano vs. Siamo andati a Milano in macchina
Here are the most common means of transportation:

Some very common actions related to transportation:
| aspettare (l’autobus, il treno…) | to wait for (the bus, the train…) |
| dare un passaggio (a qualcuno) | to give (someone) a ride |
| guidare | to drive |
| parcheggiare | to park |
| perdere (l’aereo, il treno…) | to miss (the plane, the train) |
| prendere (l’aereo, il treno…) | to take (the plane, the train) |
| salire su (sull’aereo, sul treno, in macchina…) | to get on (the plane, the train, the car…) |
| scendere da (dall’aereo, dal treno…) | to get off (the plane, the train…) |
| spostarsi | to get around* |
* also used to mean move! – spostati! spostatevi!
