Possessives and Family
You must always use the article with possessive adjectives. HOWEVER, when you refer to family members in the singular form [not plural], you DO NOT use the article with the possessive adjective. It doesn’t matter whose family we are considering: any family member follows this rule. Consider the examples:

Three exceptions to the exception:
- Terms of endearment such as mamma, papà, fratellino and sorellina do require the article, i.e.: il mio papà, la mia sorellina.
- Loro always requires the article, i.e.: il loro zio; la loro zia.
- Adding specifications or descriptions to a family member requires the article, even if the family member is singular. Consider these examples:
- Mia zia vende case. vs. La mia zia napoletana vende case.
- Tuo fratello vive da solo? vs. Il tuo fratello maggiore vive da solo?
Unmarried romantic partners and pets do not count as family members, so they require the article:
- Il nostro gatto è affettuoso.
- Il suo ragazzo è bello ma scemo.
