When to use and not to use the subjunctive
You can only use the subjunctive when a subject expresses opinions, doubt, uncertainty, personal feelings and suggestions about someone or something else, not about him/herself. Consider the following examples and notice that in each there are two subjects, and that the second subject is followed by the subjunctive.
- Non credo che lui sia una cattiva persona. [one subject expresses an opinion about another subject]
- Siamo contenti che tu vada a Roma l’anno prossimo. [one subject feels happy for another subject]
- Non sono certo che mio cugino sappia cucinare. [one subject has a doubt about another subject]
However, when a subject expresses opinions, doubt, uncertainty, personal feelings and suggestions about him/herself, we do not use the subjunctive. Consider the following examples and notice that in each there is one subject followed by di + infinitive:
- Non credo di essere una cattiva persona. [the subject expresses an opinion about him/herself]
- Siamo contenti di andare a Roma l’anno prossimo. [the subject feels happy for themselves]
- Non sono certo di saper cucinare bene. [the subject has a doubt about him/herself]
Nota bene: with idioms such as secondo me, a mio modo di vedere, per me, a mio parere (that is, not with verbs such as credo che or penso che) we do not use the subjunctive. Consider the differences:
| Secondo me, questo film è molto commovente. | Credo che questo film sia molto commovente. |
| A nostro parere loro hanno una bella casa. | Pensiamo che loro abbiano una bella casa. |
Italians use the subjunctive also with certain conjunctions and adverbs, which we will further explore in Intermediate II:
- sebbene, nonostante, malgrado [even though, although] → Sebbene Luigi sia disoccupato, non sembra agitato.
- a meno che [unless] → Ti aiuteremo a meno che tu preferisca fare da solo.
- prima che [before] → Prima che la mamma torni dal lavoro, i figli puliscono la loro camera.
- senza che [without] → Lui spende un sacco di soldi senza che sua moglie dica niente.
- affinché [so that] → L’insegnante rispiega la grammatica affinché gli studenti possano capirla meglio.
