In this module, created by Muhlenberg’s Writing Program, you’ll be given an overview of plagiarism–what it is, how Muhlenberg defines it, why we should care about it, why some students might engage in it, and how to avoid committing it. At the end of this module you will be presented with a scenario and asked to consider some concepts about plagiarism.

Did You Know?

Attitudes towards plagiarism are contextually and culturally specific. For example, the current way we conceive of plagiarism in the academic world of the United States has strong roots in America’s robust protections of intellectual property and the development of university systems around the late 19th century. Other parts of the world may have different thresholds for what constitutes plagiarism, based on their own historical contexts.

Please note, this module is intended primarily as a broad overview. Plagiarism is a complex, nuanced topic and, when in doubt, you should always consult a faculty member or Writing Center tutor.
