Il gerundio
The gerund
There are two forms of the gerund in Italian: gerundio semplice or presente (i.e.: essendo – being; scrivendo – writing, etc.) and gerundio composto or passato (i.e.: essendo stato – having been; avendo scritto – having written, etc.)
To form the gerundio presente simply take the infinitive of a verb and:
- drop -are and add -ando, as in lottare → lottando
- drop -ere or -ire and add -endo as in perdere and finire → perdendo and finendo
There are only a few irregular gerund forms:
- fare → facendo
- dire → dicendo
- bere → bevendo
To form the gerundio passato simply take the present gerund of avere or essere and add the past participle:
- lottare → avendo lottato
- perdere → avendo perso
- andare → essendo andato/a/i/e
- arrendersi → essendosi arreso/a/i/e
A pronoun will always attach to the end of the gerund. Consider the examples:
– present gerund: perdendolo, arrendendosi, etc.
– past gerund: avendolo perso, essendosi arreso, etc.
The gerund expresses several concepts that can be said with alternative structures in Italian. Notice: you can use the gerund only when there is one subject in the sentence.
Contemporaneity (while…)
Tornando a casa ho visto mio cugino = Mentre tornavo a casa ho visto mio cugino.
Modality / The way in which something is done (by…; if…)
Studiando la storia si imparano cose importanti. = Se si studia la storia si imparano cose importanti.
Cause and Effect (because, since…)
Avendo vinto la battaglia sono felici. = Poiché hanno vinto la battaglia sono felici.
- Sinonimi di poiché : dato che, siccome, visto che
Concession (even though…)
Pur avendo vinto la battaglia non sono felici. = Anche se hanno vinto la battaglia non sono felici. / Sebbene abbiano vinto la battaglia non sono felici.
- Sinonimi di sebbene : nonostante, malgrado, benché
Lastly, the verb stare + gerund indicates a progressive tense, something you are doing or were doing at a very specific moment, as in sto studiando [I am studying] and ieri alle 8 stavo facendo la doccia [I was taking a shower yesterday at 8]. This form is analogous to the imperfetto: stavo facendo la doccia = facevo la doccia.
